Questions
Q1Do I need it if I work from home with no staff?
It depends on your state and whether you hold out a commercial establishment. Some states exempt very small or purely online operations; others do not. We check rather than assume.
Q2Why do banks ask for it?
It is one of the few documents that ties a business name to a physical place of business, so it is widely accepted as business-identity proof for a current account.
Q3What happens if I do not register?
Penalties under the state Act, and difficulty at the point where you need the licence — a bank account, a tender, or a labour inspection. It is a cheap thing to get right early.
Q4I have offices in two states. Do I need two?
Yes. The licence is issued per establishment, so each premises needs its own registration under that state's Act.
